I received this question today from a reader intrigued about selling doTERRA oils and I feel like I’ve answered this question too many times to not make a blog post out of it and try to help out others of you struggling with the same question.
Christine M. – I really like everything I am experiencing and researching about doTERRA. In fact, I was just about to sign up to be a Wellness Advocate, until I understood the 100pv monthly order requirement. It just seems like such a lot of money and a lot of product to commit to for the duration of my time with the company. Also, I don’t know that many people who I feel would be interested, and I hate randomly reaching out to people to ask them to host a class. I would want to sell online like you, but at this time I don’t have a blog (though I’ve thought of starting one for years).
I’ve read through all your training guides…they are extremely helpful and informative. I just can’t get over the 100pv monthly order. Do you have any advice or thoughts that might help me get over that hurdle? While I plan to incorporate the oils into my life and possibly replace some things, I don’t see me going all in with using every item and replacing current items or practices. I really want to be able to do this, but obviously, I’m struggling.
Honestly, if I knew you personally, let’s say you were a good friend or sister this is the advice I would give you:
Since you know you want to join doTERRA and try to do it as a business, go ahead and sign up now as a Wellness Advocate and buy a kit and start experiencing the oils so you have some good experiences to blog about and some product to take photos of, etc.
You do not need to sign up for LRP/a monthly order to start with.
The next thing I would do is get my blog started, get it certified and start getting some traffic. You can wait to join doTERRA until your blog is actually up and running, but that should only take a few days.
But you will want to get your blog certified right from the beginning because you are technically not allowed to use the word doTERRA or have any doTERRA images on your blog until it’s certified and you need to be a doTERRA member to get it certified.
Growing a blog is very slow at first. It’s going to take a while to gain some momentum and really get the ball rolling. Don’t get frustrated. Just keep plugging along and consistently post content that you are proud of and passionate about and eventually the traffic will come.
But in the meantime, you won’t have the added stress of a monthly doTERRA order commitment. But you can order at wholesale prices on occasion when you want to or maybe if there is a good promotion going on.
Now let’s say you get to the point several months down the road that some people sign up under you. Great! Except this creates a problem if you want to get paid for signing them up. So here are your options:
Wait until someone signs up to sign up for LRP. If you want the 20% Fast Start Bonus for them signing up, you need to do one 100PV LRP order (all in one order) and then keep your template at least 100PV cause this signals to the computers to check your account for commissions. This means that after you place your order you just need to make sure that your order for the month is set to be at least 100PV (you can always change it up until midnight the night before it runs).
You can then decide each month if you want to do a 100PV order because someone else signed up or just do a small order (at least 1PV is what they say but the least expensive oil is $9) so you don’t lose your LRP status.
Say only one person signs up, so you decide it’s not worth it to pay $100 to make $20 so you wait to set up LRP until either enough people sign up in a month to make it worth your while or your team is large enough to make it worth it for you to do option 3.
You can do this option in addition to either option 1 or 2. This option takes the uni-level commission into account. You can actually get paid a 2% uni-level bonus on just your immediate downline with only a 50PV monthly LRP order. So with the 50PV LRP order you won’t qualify for any of the other bonuses, like the Fast Start Bonus.
But if your team right under you was large enough it could make sense to to do this option.
So let’s do the numbers. If you wanted to break even and spend $50 and make $50, the team members directly under you would have to place 2500PV in orders. So it’s not exactly the fastest way to make money but it may be an option for you.
Plus, at 50PV LRP orders you actually earn LRP product points, so really you can break even a lot sooner than that if you take that into consideration. For me, I get 30% of my purchases back as product points, so if I spent 50PV, I get 15PV in product points, so that’s 750PV less each month I need my team to have to break even.
You don’t have to pay for your monthly LRP orders yourself. You can get your friends or family to get in on your order with you or you can set up a shop on your blog and use your doTERRA account to have the product shipped directly to them (although it’s going to be hard to get a 100PV order all in one that way) – but with all the product points you’ll be getting and profits you may be making, you may not care if you need to make one 100PV order monthly.
Or if you know that you consistently sell lemon essential oil, you could buy 100PV worth of those in one order and have it shipped to you and then you would just have to ship those yourself.
And selling doTERRA like this can be a good way for your family, friend or blog readers to try essential oils at a price lower than retail price without the commitment of joining doTERRA. Just make sure to charge at least wholesale plus 10% to be compliant with doTERRA’s pricing policy.
